About this publication
The Singapore Standard Classification: Population and Households is an official framework developed by the Department of Statistics Singapore to systematically categorize and present demographic data in a consistent and standardized manner. This classification covers various aspects such as sex, age, marital status, ethnicity, citizenship, educational attainment, and employment status. Its main purpose is to ensure that data collected from censuses, surveys, and administrative records can be analyzed and compared reliably across different time periods and government agencies.
In terms of households, the classification defines and organizes different household types based on their structure and composition — for example, one-person households, nuclear families, households with relatives, and non-relative households. By using this standard, the Singapore government can monitor social changes such as shifts in household size, marriage and fertility trends, and housing patterns. The resulting insights play a vital role in public policy planning, enabling more accurate decisions in areas such as housing, education, and social welfare to meet the evolving needs of the population.
